Creating my first mural was one of my biggest art goals for this year and I’ve just completed my first one, titled “A Mango A Day”, on Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles! It will be on view for the entire month of October at the Eveleigh.
The mural spans about 10 feet long and stands about 8 feet tall. I’ve never painted anything larger than 4 feet let alone a whole wall to myself. You can probably imagine how excited I was getting ready to leave my mark on the streets for people to see as they walk by. The love I received as I worked really kept me going during those long hours in the heat. Plus all the pressure I put on myself…
Honestly, I stressed for weeks over what to paint. It was such a big deal and it had to be the perfect idea lol but of course, creative block. Coming up with the concept is usually a time-consuming part of any project, but this was another level because it’s large scale, on raw wood using materials I’m not super familiar with. All the nerves resulted in tons of stress-eating… mangoes. I love mango and was eating several every day during the conception of this piece… so, I just decided to paint a woman eating mango similar to the way I like to eat them. The simplicity of it felt genius.
When it came time to start, I got in my zone just like any other painting. For some reason I thought paint large scale would be difficult… but one thing that remained the same was my need to be alone and just super focus and present with myself through the process. A huge part of my creative process involves tuning everything outside of me out & that was no different here.
You can find her at The Eveleigh in West Hollywood (8752 W Sunset Blvd). If you see the mural, take a photo and send to me!
(Mango is 4 for $5 at Ralph’s right now)
